The Calgary International Children's Festival is a dynamic performing arts festival that presents critically acclaimed professional theatre, music and dance for young audiences. Since its inception in 1987, the Festival has grown to become an international leader in arts presentation with productions tailored from the very young to 16 years of age. Our success revolves around the respect we have for young people. We treat them as an audience in their own right, worthy of access to the best of professional creative talent the world has to offer.
This commitment to quality is evident in our expansive Community Arts Programs, which brings young people into contact with artists through workshops, theatrical experiences, and creative arts events. Our investment in quality is rewarded through audience engagement, artist feedback, consistent critical acclaim and widespread community demand.
Festival History
The Calgary International Children's Festival (CICF) was established in 1987 as a joint project between the Calgary Centre for Performing Arts and the City of Calgary Parks and Recreation Department. In 1991, the Festival's role as an advocate of children and their place in society led to the founding of Child and Youth Friendly Calgary, for which it received the International Downtown Association Award. In 1993, the Calgary International Children's Festival was incorporated as a registered society.
The CICF has grown to become the second largest performing arts festival of its kind in Canada. The organization currently employs more than 200 performing artists, administrative staff, technicians and theatre venue personnel over the course of each year with approximately 50,000 patrons attending Festival events on a yearly basis.
