Professional Development Workshops for Teens & Adults
In conjunction with the University of Calgary's Fine Arts Associates Program,
these classes are offered to teachers, theatre professionals, and anyone interested
in exploring the performing arts. All workshops are conducted by professional artists
and will be held in the ATP Rehearsal Hall. Workshops are 90-minutes in length and
cost $25.00 per person. Pre-registration is required by calling 299-8888.
FORUM THEATRE AND THE THEATRE OF THE OPPRESSED with Mariette Sluyter

This workshop introduces participants to Forum Theatre practices and
the tools of Theatre of the Oppressed. Writer, actor, and Forum Theatre
specialist Mariette Sluyter will guide workshop participants through a
series of exercises and techniques to gain a greater understanding of this
evocative theatre form. Ms. Sluyter has studied Theatre of the Oppressed
(TO) with Augusto and Julian Boal and has extensive experience in the
area of TO and youth. She has worked with Dr. Lindsay Crowshoe at the
University of Calgary on presenting issues of racism and stereotyping
of Aboriginal peoples in a theatrical format. Most recently she created
a Forum Theatre entitled, Whatever to address issues of girl bullying in
Calgary schools.

THE ART OF CLOWNING with DynamO Theatre

Jacqueline Gosselin, Artistic Director of Montréal's critically acclaimed
DynamO Theatre, will instruct this class on the art of clowning. Ms.
Gosselin graduated from the École Nationale de Cirque school and
completed a B.A. in dramatic arts at Université du Québec à Montréal.
She is a founding member of DynamO Theatre and was a performer, an
acrobat and a writer in all of the company productions until 1990. She
now manages the company's ongoing training program. In 2000, she codirected
Lili, and in 2004, wrote and directed Misstart - A Production for
Stage Clowns. In addition, she teaches at the National Theatre School of
Canada and the Cégep Lionel-Groulx college. She also gives workshops
at Cirque du Soleil. Ms. Gosselin will lead participants through a series
of exercises designed to explore the heart of the clown's spontaneity,
physicality and sense of fun.

URBAN DANCE WORKSHOP with Illstyle and Peace Productions

This class is a fun and challenging experience that will introduce
participants to various dance styles such as B-boying / B-girling
("breakdancing"), hip-hop, modern, jazz, African, and more. In addition
to learning the origins of some of the coolest contemporary dance moves
ever created, students will also learn about the role of the DJ, beatboxer,
and MC. This workshop is guaranteed to be a 90-minute inspiring workout
that embraces the culture and traditions of American urban dance.
Illstyle & Peace Productions is a culturally diverse, mixed gender dance
company whose work fuses the movement and spirit of hip-hop with a
variety of other dance disciplines. The company is a blend of some of
the finest contemporary dance artists in North America today. Their work
incorporates everything from street and club styles to jazz, tap and ballet
to deliver its positive message of individual expression to worldwide
audiences of all ages.

ZANYMATION - Animation Workshops
Quickdraw Animation Society / Alberta
90 minutes. Maximum Participants 30. Age 8 to 14
This hands-on workshop teaches young people the fundamental principles
of bringing the inanimate to life. Using paper cutouts, drawings, action
figures and computers, young people will work in groups to develop
animations that express their own unique viewpoints. In addition to
creating in a fun-filled environment, participants will gain insight into the
science of motion pictures. Instructors from Quickdraw Animation Society
lead this fun, creative and educational workshop. QAS is a Calgarybased
artist-run centre specializing in the creation and appreciation of
animation.

Join host Grisell Amaro-Galvan in a lively discussion on how Theatre
for Young Audiences can impact the cultural growth of a community.
Ms. Amaro-Galvan will be joined by representatives from Denmark's
Det Lille Turnéteater and Carte Blanche theatre companies; Artistic
Director, Jacqueline Gosselin and company members of Québec's DynamO
Theatre; Manitoba Theatre for Young People's Artistic Director, Leslee
Silverman, and Calgary playwight/educator/director Glenda Stirling.
Panelists will discuss how the evolution of Theatre for Young Audiences
has impacted their individual communities and how young people's
theatre can influence an individual's growth and enrich a community's
cultural strength.
