Volunteers Make it Happen
As a volunteer you will:

The Calgary International Children's Festival needs volunteers for numerous day,
evening and weekend shifts during the Festival (May 20 - 24, 2008). The following briefly describes the volunteer
teams that you can join. You can choose one, two, or more of the teams that interest you.

You must be over the age of 14 to volunteer without a parent, or guardian. All volunteers over the age of 18
will be interviewed and have a security check done (takes about 10 minutes). All training will be provided.
The Calgary International Children's Festival has excellent volunteer benefits including Volunteer Appreciation
Night, Volunteers Hospitality and access to our world class performances. Volunteer opportunities are only
available to residents of Calgary and surrounding areas. Thank you for your interest.
Festival Volunteer Teams
Team Leader
If you're a volunteer considering six shifts or more, come and join our group of Team Leaders.
Each of the areas listed below have a Team Leader who manages the area and assigned volunteers.
This includes set-up and tear down of the area each day. In addition, you will meet and greet the
volunteers assigned to your area, provide them with an orientation, ensure they receive breaks and
communicate with the Volunteer Coordinator. Team Leaders will need to be available Tuesday to Saturday
from approximately 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Front of House (Ushering Team)
Before and after each performance you will assist audience members in and out of the theatres.
Traffic Crew
Meet and greet school buses and assist children in crossing the street safely. This volunteer opportunity
is sometimes overlooked by prospective volunteers. This is a demanding and fun job. What we do here sets
the tone for the rest of a school's visit. Join the traffic team as a good will guardian of the Festival.
Ambassador Crew
Meet buses and guide groups to theatres to ensure they get to performances on time.
Lost & Found Tent
Work in conjunction with security experts to help maintain a safe environment by distributing Lost
Kids Tags to children on site.
Whale Tales
This year whale tales is being hosted by Calgary's Kids Play Klassics Theatre Company. Volunteers will assist
the group by monitoring the entrance and exit of the giant inflatable whale. Energetic, responsible and enthusiastic
volunteers needed.
Scholar's Choice Activity Centre
This is a large activity area where children are encouraged to build
whatever their imaginations create. Come to play!
Portable Art
This is a large activity area where volunteers guide and encourage children's creativity with pre-planned crafts.
Information & Media Check-in
Festival questions and answers come here. Festival patrons and local media are directed to this
information hub where you will have the answers to all their questions at your finger-tips. Maps,
media kits, answers to commonly asked questions all provided.
Volunteer Check-in
Welcome volunteers, check them into the master schedule, distribute Festival identification,
provide directions to volunteer area and answer questions. After initial rush, some volunteers
may be reassigned to other teams.
Festival Security Team
Be the eyes and ears for the Festival Site Crew. This position
requires mature volunteers to monitor the gates and assist the Lost and Found team.
Air Brush Face Painting
Due to health and safety concerns face painting is now done by professional airbrush artists but we
still need volunteers to help guide our young patrons through the whole process!
General Store
Just as the name implies this is where people come to purchase Festival and artist merchandise.
Volunteers help with restocking merchandise and operating the till.
Hospitality / Green Team
Help create a relaxing atmosphere for artists, volunteers, and patrons. Help prepare and distribute
snacks to our hospitality areas as well as "police the area" to help keep our site clean and bottles and
cans diverted to the recycler.
The Moovin' Groovin' Tunes Tent
This is a karaoke tent where children can belt out their favorite tunes.
Assist people with song selection and costumes, then stand back and let the
stars shine.
Qualico's Clayground
Kids dig into clay and create their own miniature masterpieces. They
then add their creations to the main sculpture and watch as the "clayground"
expands through the week.
YouthInk Comics Corner
New this year to the Festival! Volunteers will assist young people, ages 9 and up, with the creation
of their very own comic books.
Wax Hands
Back by popular demand! Volunteers will help children cast their hands in wax and then dye it funky colours.
School/Group Check-in
Welcome schools and groups, check them into the master schedule, distribute Festival identification, distribute
t-shirts and show tickets, provide directions to volunteer areas and answer questions.
Festival Set-Up Crew
This takes place on Monday, May 19, 2008. This position involves joining us at Olympic Plaza to set up the Festival.
Festival Tear Down Crew
This takes place on Saturday, May 24, 2008 after the site closes to the public. Volunteers will help tear down the
Festival.
Workshop Ambassador
During the Festival a number of workshops are offered for both children and adults. Volunteers in this area will be
responsible for taking vouchers, leading groups to their workshops, and monitoring the door during the workshop.
Floater Crew
This volunteer will need to be prepared to fill in any gap we have in ANY of our activities. This position provides a great
opportunity to experience the entire Festival. The floater position will be scheduled from approximately 11am-2pm to help
us relieve others for lunch.
The Labyrinth Inflatable Maze
This area requires mature and responsible volunteers to help patrol the safety of the maze. Volunteers will be positioned
in the entrance and exit areas of the maze.
Chalk 'ART' Wall
Volunteers in this area will help children create their own colourful masterpiece on the brand new ART wall.
